![]() ![]() When I was 8, I sent away for a pamphlet that promised to teach me to speed read. ![]() I was definitely intrigued by the story Anne and May created for Christine, so I’m glad they chose to go with her for book 2. ![]() The Miracle Girls is a fast, delightful read and I can’t wait to read the next one, which follows Christine. Riley happens to be one of the three girls that Ana ends up sitting with in detention, and even though the the four girls discover their common thread, Ana can’t imagine that they’ll ever end up friends. She gets off on the wrong foot with Riley McGee, a popular cheerleader who is Ana’s number one rival for grades. Her parents want her to have a huge quinceanera, but she’s afraid she won’t have any friends to invite. Anne and May write Christian fiction that isn’t preachy, and The Miracle Girls makes Ana’s Christianity just part of her life, not the focus of the book.Īna makes some pretty big blunders at the start of the story, but it’s easy to relate to her because she’s really struggling to find her place in the world. I bigtime heart Anne and May, the Good Girls, so I was thrilled to read The Miracle Girls, the first in their new young adult series. New girl Ana struggles with overprotective parents who push her to succeed, but when she winds up in detention she discovers she is not the only girl in school who has survived a near-fatal incident. ![]()

Vivian Vande Velde has wondered too, and she’s come up with these six alternative versions of the old legend. Have you ever wondered just what was going on when that odd little man with the long name stepped up and volunteered to spin straw into gold for the miller’s daughter? If you stop and think about it, there are some very peculiar and rather hard-to-explain components to the story. This little book of alternate versions of Rumpelstiltskin can be read in one sitting and so was very well suited for my current busy schedule (consisting of work, work, and to even things out, some more work).įirst sentence: Once upon a time, before pizzarias or Taco Bells, there was a troll named Rumpelstiltskin who began to wonder what a human baby would taste like. It was only later I thought how hard that must have been. He did them perfect and I didn't stop to think at the time that it was a man doing the voices. Not only could he do all the strange voices but he had to do several women's voices and many of them with foreign accents. Rebecca Soler's narration is fine, but it's not going to redeem a story like this for me. How many times would you want to listen to a child being forced into a fire, or a absolute monarch deciding to cut off a servant's feet so she'll have nothing better to do than sew the queen's clothes? See what I mean? It's ALL like that. It is unrelievedly dark and sad, as Levana first experiences horrible physical and mental abuse as a child, always feels unloved, and grows up quietly turning into a sociopath. It has no humor, no light moments at all. I never intend to listen to this book again. However, my primary criterion for an audiobook's success is 'Will I listen to it again?', and by this measure, Fairest fails completely. ![]() As a fan of the series, I'm glad to have listened to it, although you can easily give it a miss and not lose any momentum of the main story arc.
